Road to season 6: Best Villain (season 5 edition)

Just like in every TV series, Game of Thrones has its own villains. Some villains are extremely evil, others are more manipulative and calculated. Which one do you like the most? Which villain do you consider as the best villain in Thrones?

1. Alliser Thorne


  • Occupationmaster-at-arms of the Night Watch
  • Secondary antagonist in Jon Snow’s Storyline 
  • Evil crimesbullying Night’s Watch trainees, corruption, stabbed Jon Snow to death

2. Balon Greyjoy


  • Occupation: King of the Iron Islands
  • Secondary antagonist in the Stark storyline (season 2)
  • Evil crimes: Rebelled against the Iron Throne, indirectly responsible for the disasters that led Robb to lose the war, hating his only son

3. Cersei Lannister


  • Occupation: The Queen Mother
  • Main antagonist in season 1, secondary antagonist in season 2-5
  • Evil crimes: manipulation, loathing her youngest brother, incest, murdered her husband, forced to fire Barristan Selmy to blame someone for Robert’s death, responsible for the fall of Bran, responsible for killing the bastard children of Robert Baratheon, ordered Ilyn Payne to kill a dire wolf,  responsible for the arrestment of Loras Tyrell and Margaery Tyrell

4. Craster


  • Occupation: Owner of Craster’s Keep
  • Secondary antagonist of the Night’s Watchstoryline (season 2+3)
  • Evil crimes: incest with his daughter, treated his women like cattle, offered his own sons to the White Walkers, let his guests starve to death

5. Dagmer Cleftjaw


  • Occupation: Mate to Theon Greyjoy on the Sea Bitch
  • Secondary antagonist in Theon Greyjoy’s storyline (season 2)
  • Evil crimes: Assisted Theon in conquering the North and later betrayed him to the Boltons, murdered the orphan boys and passed them off as Bran and Rickon, stabbed Maester Luwin to death

6. Doreah


  • Occupation: Handmaiden to Daenerys Targaryen
  • Protagonist in season 1, Secondary antagonist in Deanery’s storyline (season 2)
  • Evil crimes: Strangled Irri to death, responsible for stealing Dany’s dragons, conspired together with Xaro to take Qarth

7. Khal Drogo


  • Occupation: Khal to the largest Dothraki Khalasar
  • Tertiary antagonist turned anti-hero in season 1 
  • Evil crimes: Raped Daenerys, raids a Lhazareen village to take slaves, murdered Viserys Tagaryen in a gruesome way

8. Gregor Clegane / The Mountain


  • Occupation: Knight of the Kingsguard and Cersei’s bodyguard
  • Main antagonist in the Martell’s storyline (season 4)
  • Evil crimes: Killed and raped Elia Martell, killed Elia Martell’s children, beheaded a horse during the tournament, tried to kill Loras Tyrell, raided the Riverlands, tortured prisoners, executed 200 Northmen and Rivermen prisoners at Harrenhall, killed Oberyn Martell in the most gruesome way.

9. High Sparrow

  • Occupation: High Septon of the Seven Kingdoms, commander of the Faith Militant, leader of the Sparrows
  • Main antagonist in King’s Landing storyline (season 5)
  • Evil crimes: Fanatic, arrested Loras Tyrell and Margaery Tyrell, arrested the Queen Mother, wants to turn the realm in a theocracy

10. Ilyn Payne


  • Occupation: Royal executioner of the Seven Kingdoms
  • Secondary antagonist in the Stark storyline 
  • Evil crimes: Beheaded Ned Stark with his own sword, cut out a man’s tongue

11. Jaime Lannister


  • Occupation: Lord Commander of the Kingsguard
  • Dual main antagonist in season 1, anti-hero in season 2-3, protagonist in season 4-5
  • Evil crimes: Incest, attempted to kill Bran Stark, attacked Ned Stark and killed Jory Cassel, murdered his own cousin, killed the Mad King

12. Janos Slynt


  • Occupation: Member of the Night’s Watch
  • Secondary antagonist in the Stark storyline (season 1 -5)
  • Evil crimes: Corrupt, ordered the massacre of the bastards of Robert Baratheon

13. Joffrey Baratheon


  • Occupation: King of the Seven Kingdoms
  • Secondary antagonist in season 1, main antagonist in season 2 + 3, quaternary antagonist in season 4 
  • Evil crimes:Torturing and abusing Sansa Stark, ordering Ned Stark’s execution, hired an assassin to kill Bran, responsible for the death of Lady, had all of Robert’s bastard children massacred, torments Tyrion Lannister, humiliated women, murdered Ros

14. Karl Tanner


  • Occupation: Night’s Watch ranger
  • Secondary antagonist of the Night’s Watch storyline in season 3; main antagonist of the Night’s Watch storyline in season 4. 
  • Evil crimes: responsible for the mutiny at Craster’s Keep, raped Craster’s women, tortured Bran Stark, attempted to rape Meera Reed, tried to kill Jon Snow

15. Kraznys Mo Naklov


  • Occupation: Good Master
  • Main antagonist in Daenerys’s storyline during season 3
  • Evil crimes: ruthless and merciless toward the Unsullied, arrogant and foul-mouthed to Daenerys

16. Lancel Lannister


  • Occupation: Part of the Faith Militant
  • Secondary antagonist in Cersei’s storyline (season 5) 
  • Evil crimes: plotted together with Cersei Lannister to kill King Robert, responsible for King Robert’s death, arrested Loras Tyrell, responsible for Cersei’s imprisonment

17. Locke


  • Occupation: Hunter in service of House Bolton
  • Secondary antagonist in season 3 and 4
  • Evil crimes: cut off Jaime Lannister’s sword hand, put Brienne of Tarth in a pit together with a wild bear, attempted to murder Bran Stark

18. Lysa Arryn


  • Occupation: Lady Regent of the Vale
  • Secondary antagonist in season 1, secondary antagonist in Sansa Stark’s storyline (season 4)
  • Evil crimes: extremely unfriendly and aggressive towards Tyrion Lannister, poisoned her own husband, attempted to push Sansa Stark through the Moon Door

19. Mance Rayder


  • Occupation: King-Beyond-The-Wall
  • Main antagonist in the Night’s Watch storyline (season 1-4) (although he’s more of an anti-villain)
  • Evil crimes: deserted the Night’s Watch, started a war against the Night’s Watch in order to protect his people against the incoming Winter

 20. Melisandre


  • Occupation: Red Priestess in service of House Baratheon of Dragonstone
  • Secondary antagonist in season 2-5 
  • Evil crimes: Responsible for Renly’s death, had an intimate relationship with Stannis (knowing that he was married to Selyse Baratheon), burned opponents of R’hollor alive, planned to kill Gendry, burned Mance Rayder alive, burned Shireen Baratheon alive

21. Meryn Trant


  • Occupation: Kingsguard
  • Minor antagonist in season 1-4, quaternary antagonist in season 5. 
  • Evil crimes: Responsible for the death of Syrio Forel, sadistic pedophile

22. Myranda


  • Occupation: Servant of House Bolton
  • Minor antagonist in season 3-5 
  • Evil crimes: Hunted a girl and let her being mauled to death by the dogs, Attempted to maim Sansa Stark

23. Olly


  • Occupation: Man of the Night’s Watch
  • Minor antagonist in Jon’s Storyline (season 5) 
  • Evil crimes: Killed Ygritte to seek revenge for his dead parents, plotted together with the other mutineers to kill Jon Snow, stabbed Jon Snow to death

24. The Night’s King


  • Occupation: King of the Others and ruler of the Land of Always Winter
  • True main antagonist of the series, although secondary antagonist in season 5 
  • Evil crimes: Necromancy, turned infants into White Walkers and Wights, responsible for the massacre at the Fist of the First Men and Hardhome

25. Petyr Baelish


  • Occupation: Lord Protector of the Vale
  • Secondary antagonist in season 1, quaternary antagonist in season 2 and 5, quinary antagonist in season 3 and 4
  • Evil crimes: responsible for Jon Arryn’s death, betrayed Ned Stark, plotted behind the Lannisters’ back, responsible for Ros’s death, pushed Lysa Arryn trough the Moon Door and manipulated the Lords of the Vale, used Sansa Stark in order to gain more power.

26. Polliver


  • Occupation: Man-at-arms in service of House Bolton
  • Minor antagonist in season 2 and 4 
  • Evil crimes: murdered Lommy, stole Arya’s sword ‘Needle’, beats women, rape

27. Pyat Pree


  • Occupation: Warlock of Qarth, member of the Thirteen
  • Secondary antagonist in Daenerys’s storyline in season 2. 
  • Evil crimes: stole Dany’s dragons, assassinated 11 members of the Thirteen, chained Daenerys in order to fuel the magic of the warlocks

28. Qyburn


  • Occupation: Right hand of Queen Regent Cersei Lannister
  • Minor antagonist in season 3-5. 
  • Evil crimes: practiced forbidden and unethical experiments on living humans, experimented on Gregor Clegane’s body

29. Ramsay Bolton


  • Occupation: Lord of Winterfell
  • Tertiary antagonist in season 3, secondary antagonist in season 4, main antagonist in season 5
  • Evil crimes: Tortured and flayed Theon Greyjoy, flayed Ironborn men, broke Theon mentally, hunted on a woman and let his dogs maul her to death, raped and abused Sansa Stark

  • Secondary antagonist in season 3-5
  • Evil crimes: Betrayed House Stark and stabbed his king Robb Stark to death, ordered Locke to kill the Stark boys, betrayed House Lannister (when he let Sansa marry Ramsay)

31. Sandor Clegane / The Hound


  • Occupation: Former kingsguard
  • Tertiary antagonist in season 1-2, anti-hero in season 3-4
  • Evil crimes: Killed the butcher’s boy Mycah, kidnapped Arya Stark

32. Sons of the Harpy


  • Occupation: Members of noble Meereen families
  • Main antagonists in Daenerys’s storyline
  • Evil crimes: Murdered many Unsullied, want to remove Dany from rulership in Meereen, killed Barristan Selmy, attempted to assassinate Dany, Tyrion, Missandei, Grey Worm, Jorah and Daario, stabbed Hizdahr zo Loraq to death

 33. Stannis Baratheon



  • Occupation: King of Westeros (claimant) and head of House Baratheon
  • Main antagonist of the Lannister storyline in season 2, secondary antagonist in season 3-5
  • Evil crimes: Responsible for the death of his own brother, Renly, burned non-believers at the stake, attempted to sacrifice Gendry, executed Mance Rayder, Burned his own daughter alive

34. Styr


  • Occupation: Magnar of the Thenns
  • Main antagonist to the Night Watch during season 4
  • Evil crimes: cannibalism, attacked a small village and killed a bunch of people (including Olly’s parents), attacked Castle Black, attempted to kill Jon Snow

35. Theon Greyjoy


  • Occupation: Ramsay Bolton’s servant
  • Quinary antagonist in season 2, anti-hero during season 3-5 
  • Evil crimes: Took over Winterfell to impress his father, beheaded Rodrik Cassel, murdered two farm boys and later passed them off as Bran and Rickon

36. Tormund Giantsbane


  • Occupation: Leader of the remnants of the Wildlings army
  • Secondary antagonist in Jon Snow’s storyline during season 3-4, anti-hero in season 5
  • Evil crimes: Responsible for the death of an innocent horse breeder, attacked Castle Black and attempted to kill Alliser Thorne

37. Tywin Lannister


  • Occupation: Lord of Casterly Rock and Hand of the King
  • Minor antagonist in season 1, tertiary antagonist during season 2, secondary antagonist during season 3 and main antagonist during season 4
  • Evil crimes: Ordered the Mountain and his men to sack and pillage the Riverlands in order to punish House Tully, ordered the Mountain to kill Elia Martell, responsible for the Red Wedding, loathed his own son due to his dwarfism

38. Viserys Targaryen


  • Occupation: King of Westeros (claimant)
  • Main antagonist in Daenerys’s storyline (season 1) 
  • Evil crimes: Treated Dany like a slave to get an army, beat women, looked down upon Dothraki

39. Walder Frey


  • Occupation: Lord of Riverrun
  • Main antagonist in Stark storyline (season 3)
  • Evil crimes: Betrayed House Stark and slaughtered their army, responsible for the death of Robb Stark and Catelyn Stark

40. Xaro Xhoan Daxos


  • Occupation: self-proclaimed ‘King of Qarth’
  • Main antagonist in Daenerys’s storyline (season 2) 
  • Evil crimes: Betrayed Daenerys, assassinated eleven of the Thirteen to raise in power and become King of Qarth. plotted to steal Daenerys’s dragons
